Character Arc Discussion
Hello, and welcome to your weekly Sunday discussion post!
This week's topic grows out of a conversation thread with several other community members, about Thor's character arc in Ragnarok.
One of the things I truly enjoyed in Ragnarok was watching Thor grow into a leader. He asks for help from three people - Valkyrie, Bruce and Loki - who have no interest in rushing in to save the people of Asgard. Yet somehow, he manages to get them all on side. And throughout it all, he puts the well being of his people before everything else - even to the point of destroying their beloved home world so that they can all live. Thor loses both his hammer and an eye along this journey, both of which become symbols of his personal growth.
Yet Infinity War seems to wipe out this arc completely. Instead of using the power within himself to kill Thanos, he needs to build a new axe to replace his hammer. He also gets a prosthetic eye, eliminating the eye patch. And, most devastating of all, he loses the very people he fought so hard to save, including his brother.
What do you think of this development in IW? Does it invalidate Thor's arc in Ragnarok? Or do you have a different take on it? What's your interpretation of Thor's journey, in either film? And what would you most like to see for him in Endgame?
