Discussion post: Thor at university

As we know from Infinity War, Thor studied the Groot language at university, which means Thor went to university. I have not seen NEARLY enough discussion/fic on this topic. Where do we figure he went? How long ago? What else did he study? Did they let him on any sports teams? Was he the biggest bro to ever bro? Do lots of Asgardians go to university off-world? Did Loki? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS.

OH LORDIE, I hadn't actually thought that detail through. XD I, uh, wow.

The idea of Asgardians, especially the royal family, going to university on other worlds would actually be a fairly plausible worldbuilding detail, to expand their horizons at least on a college-student level - sort of like having a required exchange-student year, or something similar.

Man. I want all the college-age Thor and Loki fic now. It's like the "in-universe coffee shop AU" tag, but for college AUs.

Yeah, I feel "royal son studying abroad" feels very plausible, although on the other hand they must surely have been unbearable to be around, with that Asgardian superiority complex. Maybe they only went so far as, like, Vanaheim or Alfheim? One of the other realms under Asgard's control? But it's hard to imagine them teaching Groot there. IDK.

I completely forgot about that detail! Thor (and Loki) at Asgard university :D I figure they must have a university on Asgard, though likely some go to universities on other worlds, at least for an exchange semester.

Hmm, do you think Asgard is big enough to support a university? Asgard itself doesn't seem like it can possibly have that large a population. Although OTOH I suspect you and I might mean slightly things by the word university anyway, and IDK what Thor meant, so maybe. And maybe Thor studied Groot during that semester abroad. :D

Oh, that's an interesting idea! Like maybe Thor sort of collected them around him at school? That'd be fun.

There's an implication that Hogun is from another world, while I think Volstagg and probably Fandral are Asgardian. At least, Fandral seems more capable of surviving being through and through impaled than I expect as non-godly.

I'm bummed that Ragnorok tore through so many, though I admit any toys not broken then would just have gone in Infinity War.

But yeah, it'd be fun 'seeing' how many ways of Meeting and Collecting the Warriors Three fandom can devise. And how them meeting 'little brother' went.

Yeah, I think TDW makes it clear Hogun is from Vahaheim, where the fight scene at the beginning of the movie takes place.

You know, I never was very interested in the Warriors Three, just because they never got much development, but you make me kind of want fic of each of them individually with Loki, possibly from the warriors' points of view. Outside POV of Loki is always fun. :D

I'm wondering if we'll get 2012!Loki discovering his origins in time to not invoke Greek/Shakespearean Tragedy all over Freya. Commercial or home-brew, either is fine.

Well, 2012!Loki will already have discovered his origins, since that happened in Thor 1, which was prior to Avengers 1 in 2012.

I watched Thor and Thor II at home. But I thought it's Two that he goes to fight Laufrey and draws FrostGiants to Asgard.

So many movies, they blur. (Especially when I binge titles because they bunch up with my library queue. ;) )

Nope, that's Thor 1! Which was a VERY eventful movie for Loki, possibly even more than for Thor.

Not Sequential viewing leads Fan Astray! So much is hidden in Fury's horrible no good week. So was Mother visiting him in his cell also part of his magic?

I thought for the longest time that Frigga visiting Loki in his cell was him trying to make himself feel better, which interpretation I liked for its pathos, but there's a deleted scene that shows that it was actually her, and she was visiting him with her magic.

Headcanon: Thor didn't plan to take Groot. He was walking along, talking to a woman, and they got to her classroom he was like "What a coincidence! This is my class too!" so that he didn't have to end the conversation, and then he had to hurry and sign up for the class later that afternoon. Much to his surprise, he not only enjoyed learning Groot, he was good at it.

Then his poor mother had to explain to Odin after a letter home that actually, Thor was not doing vannaheim history of the third age but was instead learning to talk to a species of tree. And that is when Odin went to the pub.
