We're going to have non-spoilery discussion posts as well, but for today, let's talk about the new Captain Marvel trailer that came out last week! Share all your thoughts and hopes and feelings!
I am excited, even if the de-aging tech is mildly terrifying. I am a huge 80s fan, but 90s era settings rarely getting love and I am excited to see it.
Sadly, the local Blockbusters went out of business a few months because the trailer came out. I would have taken amusing pictures with it. At least our indie video rental store is still doing well.
Ha ha I am reserving judgement on the de-aging tech. I forget, is it only SLJ or is someone else getting the treatment, too?
OMG, I had no idea Blockbusters were still in business anywhere! I thought the entire chain had gone bankrupt. <3 to your indie video rental store, though. These days if something's not streaming, I get it through the library. I haven't seen a video/DVD rental place in years.
I think there is another digitally de-aged character, but I am not sure.
We've got a local place dedicated to preserving access to lots of obscure films. In more rural parts of Oregon there are video rental places due to the state of the internet out there. According to google, a Blockbuster still exists in Bend, Oregon. I should check it out next time I am going through there.
tbh, when you said 'de-aging' I interpreted that to mean making Carol younger than I assume her to be in the comics. (I see her current Captain Marvel iteration as being in her 40's or so...) But actually Sam Jackson doesn't look bad? Although I thought the same thing about Charles in Erik in X3, so I might not be a good judge.
MOSTLY SAME. I read a few issues of the reboot comic where she first gets the costume redesign and the Captain Marvel title (as opposed to Ms. Marvel, which was what she was called before), but it didn't leave a strong impression on me. I'm excited to see what they do with her in the MCU!
Princess Sparklefists is awesome in the comics, but the MCU version is going to be pretty different. I've read the DeConnick run on Captain Marvel and some other stuff, but I don't know what to expect either.
I hope the Princess Sparklefists nickname happens in the films.
Maybe because there's so few of them? In the U.S. military, women were banned from flying for years because they weren't allowed in active combat duty. *eyeroll*
*eyeroll* indeed! Maybe that's it. (Or maybe it's as simple as I imprinted real hard on Starbuck from BSG...). Either way, so excited for Carol! It's nice having so few expectations about what she's going to/should be like. I'm just ready to fall in love.
Stuff I love in this trailer: * CAROL LOOKING FUCKING BADASS. I'm weak for glowy space fighting, and she looks SO good, omg. The mohawk helmet! Just like, all her action scenes. * "I'm not gonna fight your war, I'm gonna end it." * I'm so here for all this amnesia business. Also the nonconsensual (?) body modification. * How there is zero evidence of obligatory het love interest.
I was kind of meh on the last trailer, but I love this one, and now I am so ready to see this movie. Also, I'm hoping we get lots of emotionally complicated Carol-centric fic out of it, because that is exactly my jam.
It's interesting, from an in-universe perspective, that she never got namedropped in all those years with the Avengers and SHIELD and all of that. I wonder if her time on Earth in this movie is kind of a secret, and not a lot of people know about it besides Fury? Although you'd think if a buff woman in a jumpsuit is punching unexpectedly spry old ladies on the train, word would get around.
I'm so here for all this amnesia business. Also the nonconsensual (?) body modification Hard same. I think the amnesia stuff will be good for making yet another origin story not feel like an origin story, and I am always here to add to the list of noncon body mod MCU characters. (I kinda already ship her with Nebula TBH...).
It's interesting, from an in-universe perspective, that she never got namedropped in all those years with the Avengers and SHIELD and all of that Good point! Especially when -- from a meta/Doylist POV -- they were already name-dropping Strange as early as TWS, so I don't know if it can just be chalked up to "she wasn't part of the MCU at the time." I'll be interested to see how/if they handle that.
Although you'd think if a buff woman in a jumpsuit is punching unexpectedly spry old ladies on the train, word would get around. I guess it's slightly easier given the time period? Like, if Fury paid off the newspapers to not report it, at least there wouldn't be cell phone footage or whatever. Maybe it became an urban legend!

Good point. We'll get to find out how she got where she is without having to live it all in real time (because I, too, am pretty bored of origin stories).
Maybe it became an urban legend!
Oh my gosh, that would be amazing. Yes please. Maybe complete with some writeups on 90s conspiracy theory websites. And then when she returns ~25 years later for Endgame, oh man!

And if you haven't seen X3, DON'T. Just... don't.

I haven't seen X3. I've pretty much stayed to the Avengers side of things in Marvel, with a few forays into things like Deadpool.

I feel like if anyone was going to call her that, it would be Tony. Or maybe Rocket? And both of those seem like real possibilities!
